Gary A. Lyons - Chairman
Gary A. Lyons was named Rigel's Chairman of the Board in November 2014, having joined us as a director in October 2005. Mr. Lyons also serves as a member of the board of directors of Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc., where he served as Chief Executive Officer from 1993 until 2008. In addition, Mr. Lyons serves on the boards of directors of Vical, Inc., KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Cytori Therapeutics, Inc., and was Chairman of the board of directors of NeurogesX, Inc., until 2013. He served on the board of directors of PDL BioPharma, Inc., until he resigned to join the board of directors of Facet Biotech Corporation, following Facet's spin-off from PDL, and served on the board of directors until Facet's acquisition of Abbott Laboratories in 2010. Mr. Lyons also served on the board of directors of Poniard Pharmaceuticals June 2009 to December 2011. Prior to joining Neurocrine, he held a number of senior management positions at Genentech, including Vice President of Business Development and Vice President of Sales. He also served as a member of Genentech's Executive Committee. Mr. Lyons was responsible for international licensing, acquisitions and partnering for Genentech's Corporate Venture Program and had operating responsibility for Genentech's two subsidiaries, Genentech Canada, Inc. and Genentech Limited (Japan). He holds a B.S. in marine biology from the University of New Hampshire and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Bradford S. Goodwin
Bradford S. Goodwin joined us as a director in January 2007. Mr. Goodwin is currently CEO of CharlestonPharma, LLC. Mr. Goodwin's prior public company board services include NeurogesX, Facet Biotech Corporation (now Abbott Laboratories), PDL BioPharma, CoTherix, Inc. (now Actelion Pharmaceuticals), and Novacea, Inc.. From 2001 to 2006, he was Chief Executive Officer and Director of Novacea, Inc., a publicly-held biopharmaceutical company focused on in-licensing, developing and commercializing novel therapies for cancer. Prior to Novacea, Mr. Goodwin was President, Chief Operating Officer and Founder of Collabra Pharma, a company focused on pharmaceutical product licensing and development. Before starting Collabra, he held various senior executive positions with Genentech, Inc., including Vice President of Finance. After becoming a CPA while working as an auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, he served on expert advisory committees of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board. Mr. Goodwin holds a BS in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley.
Keith A. Katkin
Keith A. Katkin joined us as a director in June 2015. Mr. Katkin is currently the CEO of Urovant Sciences, a global biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapies for urologic conditions. Mr. Katkin previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer, and a member of the board of directors of Avanir Pharmaceuticals from 2007 to 2016, until its acquisition by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. Mr. Katkin led the growth and ultimate sale of Avanir to Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. in 2015. Mr. Katkin joined Avanir in 2005 as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing and a member of Avanir’s executive management team. Prior to joining Avanir, Mr. Katkin served as the vice president, Commercial Development for Peninsula Pharmaceuticals, playing a key role in the concurrent initial public offering and ultimate sale of the company to Johnson and Johnson. Additionally, Mr. Katkin's employment experience includes leadership roles at InterMune, Amgen and Abbott Laboratories. Mr. Katkin is currently a member of the board of directors of Avanir, Syndax Pharmaceuticals, Novus Therapeutics, MC10 and the Brain Injury Association of America. Mr. Katkin has an M.B.A. from the Anderson School at UCLA and earned his B.S. in Business and Accounting from Indiana University. Mr. Katkin is also a licensed certified public accountant.
Walter H. Moos, Ph.D.
Walter H. Moos, Ph.D. joined us as a director in March 1997. Dr. Moos is currently Chief Executive Officer of ShangPharma Innovation, Inc., a privately held biotechnology incubator, investor, and partnering organization. He retired from his position as President of SRI Biosciences in 2016 after more than a decade at the independent nonprofit SRI International (Stanford Research Institute). From 1997 to 2004, Dr. Moos served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MitoKor, Inc., which became the biopharmaceutical company MIGENIX, Inc., where he was a member of the board of directors from 2004 to 2008. Prior to that, he served as a Vice President of Chiron Corp. (now Novartis), and as a Vice President at the Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research Division of the Warner-Lambert Co. (now Pfizer). He has been an adjunct Professor at the University of California San Francisco since 1992. He has also served on the boards of numerous private companies and several non-profit organizations and has been an advisor to a wide range of organizations in the U.S. and around the world. Dr. Moos holds an A.B. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California Berkeley.
Peter S. Ringrose, Ph.D.
Peter S. Ringrose, Ph.D. joined us as a director in February 2005. Dr. Ringrose's experience in the pharmaceutical industry spans more than 40 years and includes key leadership positions as Senior Vice-President for Worldwide Drug Discovery and Medicinal R & D Europe at Pfizer, Inc. and Division Director of Chemotherapy, Infectious Diseases and Molecular Sciences at the Sandoz Research Institute in Vienna, Austria. In 2002, Dr. Ringrose retired from Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he served as the company's Chief Scientific Officer, as well as President of the Pharmaceutical Research Institute. He served as chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (UK) from 2003 to 2009 and was a member of the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board. He is Council member of the Foundation for Science and Technology in the United Kingdom and also chairs the Corporate Partnership Board at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he is a lifetime Honorary Pitt Fellow. Dr. Ringrose is also a non-executive director of Theravance Inc.. He was a director of Astex Therapeutics, Inc., and Bitoica Technology Ltd., and served on the Scientific Advisory Boards of Schering-Plough Research Institute, Cempra Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Accenture Inc. Dr. Ringrose also served on the board of governors for the New York Academy of Sciences. He has served on the boards of Cambridge Antibody Technology Ltd., ImClone Systems, Inc. and Pfizer Ltd., and on the Scientific Advisory Board at Merlin Biosciences Ltd. Dr. Ringrose received a BS, an MA and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.
