Rigel Files Shelf Registration Statement

South San Francisco, CA, - December 11, 2001

Rigel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: RIGL) today announced that it has filed a Form S-3 shelf registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The shelf registration statement allows for Rigel to issue various types of securities from time to time, up to an aggregate of $50 million.

The registration statement on Form S-3 relating to these securities has been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission but has not yet become effective. These securities may not be sold, nor may offers to buy be accepted, prior to the time the registration statement becomes effective.
